In the transition from verse to chorus to verse, keep strumming G in time with the song, but just before the lead into the next part, you'll hit a quick C - D and then back to G. Each note of the transition, C-D, are only played for one beat. You can do this for each transition if you like, just to keep the feel of the old style.
